Call of Duty Review

Call of Duty is the most realistic war games I have ever played. Not only are the graphics stunning, the sound effects, music, dependence on teammates, weapons, and the overall feel of the game is amazing. In a war that changed everything you get the chance to partake in some of the most epic battles that took place throughout the European front. What really makes the game great is the fierce intensity. It just adds such a realistic touch that for a moment or two you might actually be able to picture what the men of "The Greatest Generation" were put through.

I did something with this game that no other game has made me want to do. I completed it on the regular difficulty, and the next day I put the difficulty all the way up and started over at the beginning. The single player portion of this game is nothing less than amazing, and with maps/missions taken right out of Band of Brothers and Enemy at the Gates you really see how well this game was produced, right down to the small details.

Gameplay
The game is split up into three different campaigns, obviously taking place during World War II: The American Campaign, The British Campaign, and the Russian Campaign. I would say that all of the campaigns are equally fun to play but I'm sure you or some of your friends may like one or two in particular. I'm not going to go any further into details about the campaigns because you really need to play them for yourself. I will say that I truly enjoyed Infinity Ward's efforts with the different campaigns.

As you probably are aware, CoD is a first-person shooter. I am a big fan of the genre and I must say that the game's controls were easy to use and were comfortable - something that isn't always the case. It isn't surprising that it feels so comfortable though because the game is based on the Quake III engine. The AI in the game made missions difficult but were not always that smart.

Graphics
As I stated above everything seemed so perfect, right down to the small details. Creating the vast environments must have been quite and undertaking but I am happy to report that they pulled it off. It is an excellent feeling when you look out to see the war torn cities and countryside around you – not that war is a good thing – but because of how incredibly realistic everything is.

The player and the weapon models are well done and all of the intensity that war brings, with explosions and bullets left and right are also incredible. One must experience this game for himself to truly understand how great the game is.

Sound
Michael Giacchino is truly a master musician. He composed and produced all of the background music that is present throughout the game. Giacchino has worked on several large motion pictures as well as the Medal of Honor games, and the music is one of the things that really make the game stand out.

Getting passed the soundtrack all of the other great sounds such as: bullets whizzing by your head, gunfire in the distance, the voice acting, mortars, etc. really ads a sense of realism.

Multiplayer
Call of Duty also offers a multiplayer portion to the game, which is also very fun. Sometimes it can just turn into a sniper war though. It is important to note that the popular bunny hopping that people were doing has been fixed. One really cool thing that they have included something called the kill cam, which allows you to watch yourself through the eyes of your killer for the last five seconds before he killed you. The multiplayer seems good, but I enjoy the single player a lot more, which is the strongest point of the game.

Replay Value
While the game is somewhat short the replay value for Call of Duty is very high. It offers solid multiplayer and as I stated above the desire to go back and play through the game again will be present with many gamers. I really like to give a game a lot of credit when they include a fun multiplayer portion. It seems like this aspect is sometimes overlooked which upsets me quite a bit.

Conclusion
In my personal opinion, I would have to say that Call of Duty is the best PC game of 2003. If you are thinking of picking up a game, get this one. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. I am extremely satisfied with Call of Duty and I would definitely say it is worth the money.
