DC Universe Online E3 Preview

Another big MMO at the show, DC Universe Online was also playable at the show and even though it’s tough to gauge how good an MMO will be after just 15 minutes of playtime, I had fun with the limited PvP demo.

It was essentially a pre-built character duking it out with others at the showfloor, flying around, tossing stuff and beating guys up until I got tired of doing it for 15 minutes and left. There’s some simplification going on, especially with the interface. There were only 4 designated hotkeys for two types of skills – one being offensive stuff and other four for support. I could only switch off to what kind of skill I wanted to use by holding shift, instead of it being one giant set of hotkeys.

It was a little confusing as to why that exists, but in general, I enjoyed all the flying and tossing heavy things at guys. The game was cross-compatible at the show, as PS3 and PC players fought in the same server, but the developer I spoke to stated that the only thing preventing them from doing this in retail are some legal binds. That might get cleared up by release, because nothing else is preventing them from making the game cross-compatible out of the box. Look for more news on that in the future.
